What is Daughter’s Day?

Daughters Day is, as the name clearly says, a day to celebrates our daughters. Different countries celebrate it on different days and in India it is celebrated on the last Sunday of September. This year that falls on 25th September. The reason for celebrating this day is to make the girls of the country aware of their rights. All people should be made aware about the discrimination against girls in the country. This day reminds us to cherish our daughters. Girls bring a lot of love and happiness in our lives. Celebration of girls is important. Because, in developing countries, girls are often seen as a burden. But this day is celebrated with the aim of understanding the importance of girls. Daughter’s Day is celebrated to express affection and commitment towards girls.  

A girl means happiness to the family. A daughter is the source of love, the support of the father. No matter how much a girl grows up, she is an angel to her father. The whole universe started with girl; The cycle of nature is incomplete without a girl. A girl is the beginning of everything. Everything is worthless without her. National Daughter’s Day is celebrated with the aim to give equal place to girls in the society and also to convince the society about the importance of girls.

On National Daughters Day, millions of people take to social media to share photos of their daughters and send messages to show their affection and appreciation for their daughters. National Daughters Day began in India and was first celebrated in 2007. In a culture where sons have been revered for hundreds of years but daughters have often taken a backseat, this day was created to encourage parents to show appreciation to their daughters. As gender imbalance feels especially heavy and, in some cultures, daughters are thought of as a burden instead of a blessing, it is important to remind mothers and fathers what an amazing gift their daughters are no matter how young or old.

We bring you a list of ‘First Indian Women’, noting the first time an Indian woman achieved something.  

  1. Draupadi Murmu, the new President of India, is the country’s first tribal woman to win the top constitutional post. Murmu also created history by becoming the first President of Odisha of a major political party or alliance. She was also the first woman governor of Jharkhand.
  2. Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi: Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi became the first Indian female physician in the year 1887. She was also the first Indian woman who was trained in Western medicine and the first woman to travel to the United States of America.
  3. Indira Gandhi: Indira Gandhi became the first woman Prime Minister of India and served from 1966 to 1977. Indira Gandhi was named as the ‘Woman of the Millennium’ in a poll which was organised by BBC in 1999. In 1971, she became the first woman to receive the Bharat Ratna award.
  4. Mother Teresa: Mother Teresa became the first Indian woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
  5. Kiran Bedi: Joining Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1972, Kiran Bedi became the first woman officer in India. Moreover, later in 2003, Kiran Bedi also became the first woman who was appointed as the United Nations Civil Police adviser.
  6. Justice M. Fathima Beevi: In 1989, Justice M. Fathima Beevi became the first female judge who was appointed to the Supreme Court of India.
  7. Priya Jhingan: With a dream to be in the Indian Army, Priyan Jhingan became the first Indian woman to join the Indian Army in 1993.
  8. Kalpana Chawla: Kalpana ChawlaKalpana Chawla was an Indian-born American astronaut and mechanical engineer who was the first woman of Indian origin to go to space.
  9. Pratibha Patil: She became the first woman President of India and held office from July 2007 to July 2012.
  10. Mithali Raj: Mithali Raj was the first woman to score a double hundred in Test Cricket (214* against New Zealand at Wellington, 2004). She was the first to achieve this landmark in the world.
  11. Sania Mirza: The professional tennis player became the first ever Indian woman to win a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) title in 2005. Later in 2015, Sania Mirza became the first Indian woman to be ranked no. 1 in WTA’s doubles rankings.
  12. Mary Kom: Mary Kom is the only woman boxer who has won a medal in each of the six World Championships. She was the only Indian woman boxer who qualified for the 2012 Olympics and became the first Indian woman boxer to win a gold medal in Asian Games in 2014.
  13. Saina Nehwal: Currently ranking no. 2 in the World, Saina Nehwal became the first Indian to win a medal in Badminton at Olympics in 2012. Later in 2015, she became the first Indian woman to become no. 1 in World ranking.4.
  14. Arunima Sinha: Arunima Sinha is the first female amputee to climb Mount Everest. She is also the first Indian amputee to climb the Everest. She was a national level volleyball player who was pushed from a running train by thieves in 2011 as she was resisting them. After meeting this accident, one of her legs had to be amputated below the knee.

Financial independence gives women freedom to make decisions that suit their personal life. when you are dependent on a man or other human beings for survival then your self-esteem is affected since you are at their mercies. Education therefore must be encouraged at an early age and financial education is important to all children at an early age. parents should start talking to their children about empowerment at an early age.
