History of Woman’s Day:
The history of International Women’s Day (IWD) dates back to the early 20th century, when women’s movements around the world started to demand better working conditions, voting rights, and gender equality.
The first IWD was celebrated on March 8, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. More than a million people, both men and women, attended rallies and demonstrations to demand women’s rights, including the right to vote and hold public office. The theme of the first IWD was “Equal rights, Equal pay, and Right to vote for women.”
Over the years, IWD has been celebrated in various ways, including marches, rallies, and cultural events. During World War I, IWD became a vehicle for women’s peace activism. In 1917, women textile workers in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg) organized a strike and demonstration on March 8, which marked the beginning of the Russian Revolution. According to sources, the Soviet government later declared March 8 as a national holiday.
In the decades that followed, IWD was celebrated in many countries, but it was not until 1975 that the United Nations officially recognized March 8 as International Women’s Day. Since then, IWD has become a Global Day of Recognition and celebration of women’s achievements, as well as a call to action for gender equality and women’s rights.
Why to Celebrate International Woman’s Day:
International Woman’s Day is celebrated to recognize the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, and to call for gender equality. The day is celebrated to focus on the social, economic and cultural issues of women. This day is dedicated to those women who struggle for their role in the society. Who were not supported by the society in their development.
This day, Women are made aware of their rights and women’s participation in every field.

This year the theme of International Women’s Day has been ‘Embrace Equity’. It means recognizing that everyone deserves to be treated fairly and with dignity.

Equality and equity are two concepts that are often used interchangeably, but they actually have distinct meanings.
Equality refers to the idea that everyone should be treated the same, without discrimination or bias. In other words, equality is about giving everyone an equal opportunity, regardless of their background or circumstances.
Equity, on the other hand, recognizes that not everyone starts from the same place and may require different levels of support to achieve equal outcomes. Equity is about creating a level playing field by providing resources and support to those who need it most.
To illustrate the difference between equality and equity, consider the following example: Suppose there are three people of different heights who want to catch fruit from tree. Giving all three people the same size box to stand on would be equality, but it would not be equitable because the tallest person would still be able to catch the fruit, while the shortest person would not. In this case, equity would involve giving the shortest person a taller box to stand on so that they can have an equal opportunity to see the game.
In summary, while equality focuses on treating everyone the same. Equity recognizes that fairness may require treating people differently in order to achieve equal outcomes.
